Forest With Sunrays

Jay Cherney

My career as a wounded healer began around age 4, when I was drawn into the role of peacemaker. I attempted (and mostly failed) to calm the scary, chronic battles between my critical mom and two older sisters. I hoped training as a psychologist would equip me to do a better job—and figure out my insecure self. (Isn’t that why most of us entered this field?)

I have a wide range of interests in my clinical practice: anxiety, depression, couples, family systems, and addiction (which comes in so many sneaky forms).  I’ve developed programs for organizations on difficult conversations and resilience.

I also branched into consulting with financial advisors and high net worth families. I help them clarify their money story, which contains their true deepest values. Many people blindly allow outdated money narratives to drive unhealthy financial and life decisions.  My own close-knit family was permanently ripped apart over my grandfather’s (very modest) inheritance, deeply wounding everyone.

One of my most meaningful adventures was developing DadLab, a learning community for new fathers.  The groups deepened men’s engagement with babies and sparked lifelong learning about our most complex, daunting and important job: parenting.

Working with Danny and Diane to create the Wounded Healers model at Jefferson’s MATER addiction program has been my most exciting and enriching collaboration.

Looking back, I see that facilitating more satisfying human connections is my calling.

And now, our fractured world makes this healing mission seem more urgent than ever.
